FACTS
- Since the opening of the mine in 1996, Newmont has continuously monitored the quality of the water in Buyat Bay. Newmont reported this data on a quarterly basis to the Government of Indonesia.
- In addition to the monitoring requirements by the government Newmont also monitored the following:
- Detoxification of tailings
- Surface water quality outside mining area
- Ground water quality
- Ground water quality at community wells
- Sea water quality
- Newmont also continuously checked other marine sites to ensure that any effects of tailings placement were as predicted in the ANDAL report, and that there were no impacts to surface water or costal environments.
- The seawater quality test results from all the independent studies demonstrate that arsenic and mercury in Buyat Bay water are well below the most stringent Indonesian standards, and in fact are equivalent to ocean water any where in the world.
- To date analysis of the samples have confirmed that the submarine tailings had no significant adverse impact on the water. The results show that the water from Buyat Bay is comparable to water found elsewhere in the world.
