Since the mine opened in 1996, the health of the local community has been a primary focus of Newmont's community development programs. Newmont has worked closely with local government and community leaders to develop a variety of programs, including those dedicated to providing immunizations to children, nutritional supplements to members of the community, and health services for the elderly. Newmont has also provided resources to help build a healthy community, such as ambulance service, emergency medical care, and sanitation systems.

Three agencies have determined there are no harmful health impacts from the mine in various communities around Buyat Bay: The Indonesian Ministry of Health; The International Seminar on Mining, Environment and Sustainable Development; and the World Health Organization (WHO) in conjunction with Japan's Institute for Minamata Disease. In addition, UNSRAT's Medical School (Sam Ratulangi University) has conducted studies of human health around Buyat Bay. Their studies have also shown that these communities suffer from little knowledge about health and clean living conditions, and that these factors, combined with poor sanitation and low economic levels, contribute adversely to community health.
